These six pieces were specifically created for the October 2009 show of Aaron Wilder Art Space in Phoenix, Arizona. The show was called The State of Equality 2009 and focused on the equal rights for the LGBT community. These six pieces specifically focus on the equal right to marriage for same-sex couples. Due to the timing, the series captures a very specific snapshot of the states where same-sex marriage was legal. California's Proposition 8 had made gay marriage illegal during this time and the District of Columbia would declare marriage equality later in 2009 (not to mention those states which have embraced marriage equality since). Thus, the six states depicted are Connecticut, Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. Interestingly, Maine reversed its decision after the completion of this series (November 2009) and then reversed its decision again (November 2012) to re-legalize gay marriage.
