The phrase “Abundance of Caution” existed before the Covid-19 pandemic. Its origin is in the Latin phrase “abundans cautela.” Many today, however, strongly identify it with the pandemic due to how frequently it was used during the global-to-local shelter-in-place. A key component of the meaning behind the phrase is that the level of caution justifies preemptive action even if it may seem unnecessary. This series of digital collages traces notions of contact and meditates on the literal and symbolic meanings of the phrase, which can include variations such as avoidance of recklessness, copious attention, deluge of vigilance, oversufficient prudence, plentiful alertness, and surplus of care. A range of types of warnings are visually investigated through aesthetic strategies of chaos, clarity, dissection, juxtaposition, layering, and multiplicity.
